Celtic Speed, Barcelona review
Celtic Speed's historic racing team travelled to Barcelona on the weekend of April 13/14 for the first race of the Masters Formula 1 Championship and the Group C Championship.
The team are using the ex Arturio Merzario March 761 for selected rounds of the F1 Championship which caters for F1 cars up to the 1983 season. A super grid of some of F1's finest history cars lined up in Barcelona and the pole time was set by Bobby Verdon-Roe in his ex Nike Lauda McLaren MP4. Tommy did a great job to set the 4th fastest time in his class for pre '78 cars and lined up in 17th position overall on the 26 car grid.
In the race Tommy made great progress moving up into 3rd place in class and 15th overall. This was a super result for Tommy in only his 3rd race with the car.
In the Group C race Tommy used the ex Leyton House Kremer Racing Porsche 962 and he set the 9th fastest time in qualifying. In the first race, the team started from the pit lane after a mistake saw the car leaving the garage 30 seconds too late to make the starting grid. However a sterling drive through the field saw Tommy climb to 6th place overall, 4th in the C1 class after a great dice with fellow 962 racer Hendrik Lindberg.
In the 2nd race Tommy started from 9th on the grid and finished 5th overall and 4th in class this time beating the Tic-Tac 962 of Lindberg after another fantastic battle.
Aaron Scott raced the ex Gordon Spice Spice SE86, a world championship winning car in '86 & '87. In the first race he had a storming drive through the field after starting from the pit lane to finish 3rd overall and also set the fastest lap of the race beating all the C1 cars in the process.
In race 2 Scott finished 2nd overall to the race winning ex Michael Schumacher Mercedes C11 and also took the victory in the C2 class.
The next race takes place at Donington on May 4/5. Tommy now lies 2nd in the Group C Champiosnhip while Scott leads the C2 category.
